Keyword Optimisation – SEO Best Practice in 2019

Keyword stuffing is not the way to kick your SEO goals in 2019. Having said that, your keywords need to be both on and off page if you’re to rank. The most important places to optimise your keywords are:

  1. Headings and Body Content – Place your main keyword in the main heading (H1 tag), the first 100 words of body content and then add a ‘natural’ number of mentions in the remaining content.
  2. Meta Data – Use your main keyword in the page title and meta description. While Google’s algorithm doesn’t include the meta data, inserting keywords in the page title and meta description helps with Click Through Rates (CTR) which is a ranking signal.
  3. URL – Insert the main keyword in the URL (when possible). By inserting the main keyword in the URL, it further tells searches what the page is about and can really boost Click Through Rates (CTR).
  4. Image Titles and Alt Text – Page titles and alt text can be added to an image tag in HTML. Adding keywords to page titles and alt text won’t give you much of a ranking boost, but it’s worth the effort.
  5. Keep Keyword Mentions Natural – Use your keywords a natural number of times and don’t force keywords into your copy if they don’t belong contextually. Your #1 priority when implementing your organisation’s SEO strategy should always be the user experience (UX) it delivers.
