Changing the keywords in an SEO campaign is possible, but it needs to be done with careful consideration, planning and forethought.

Keep in mind that your entire SEO campaign is built around the keywords you select in the first month. Your website is audited and changed to accommodate for your keywords — taking up the first three months of a typical SEO campaign — and supporting offsite content is created on an ongoing basis.

Given the long-term nature of SEO, we will always do our best to ensure an SEO campaign is built around a focus area with the longevity to avoid changing the keywords too soon. However, we do understand that your needs may change over time.

Should you ever wish to change your keywords or the focus of your SEO campaign, you have two options. Firstly, we can increase the budget and begin an additional focus, while maintaining the strength of your existing rankings. This is often the option with the smoothest transition, one which also ensures your previous investment in SEO is not lost.

However, we know that increasing the budget is not always an option for our customers, and in this case we can change the keywords in your existing campaign. It’s important to keep in mind that offsite work will, therefore, stop on your previous keywords, and some rankings may be affected.

Once you have decided to change your keywords, spoken to your account manager and come to an agreement as to how to do so, we will schedule you into the next month’s round of SEO intakes. Your campaign will be treated internally as a new one, and we will completely revise your strategy and perform the website audit process again.

So while it is certainly possible to change your keywords, it isn’t something that can be done at the flick of a switch. If there’s an area of your business that you would like to shift focus to, but can’t necessarily invest the time and budget to wait for SEO, Google Ads is always an option. Ads (previous Google AdWords) enables you to chop and change your campaign as much as you like, and gives you the flexibility you don’t necessarily find with SEO.

If you’re considering changing the focus area of your campaign, chat to your account manager today about the right way for you.
