Business owners can now add products to their GMB profiles and listings which are visible in mobile search but not Google Maps (yet). At present, this appears only to be available for business types (small and medium-sized individual businesses) which offer products rather than services.

This feature hasn’t been rolled out for product-focused business types, and “Products” appears in place of “Services” for product-focused business categories.

The “Services” section of the GMB dashboard for most services-focused businesses currently remains the same. However, some businesses now have the option of adding both Products and Services.
For businesses which have had the Services category replaced with Products, there’s no reason why you can’t combine both products and services in the one category. The Product section of the GMB dashboard is slightly more comprehensive than the Services section. It allows you to add a Call to Action (CTA)…

…and specify a Price Range (minimum and maximum price).

An image that meets Google’s guidelines is required for all Product listings.

Both sections allow you to group products and services by collection (Products) and section (Services), and character counts are applied to all Products and Services fields except for the Price field.

Character counts vary between Products and Services and at present are:

Products

  • Product collection — 58 characters
  • Product name  — 58 characters
  • Additional details (Collection description) — 1,000 characters
  • Product description — 1,000 characters

Services

  • Section name — 140 characters
  • Item name — 140 characters
  • Item description — 1,000 characters

This is a valuable feature that enables retailers to put their product catalogues in front of more searchers and we can expect more features like this to be rolled out in coming months as Google makes further improvements to the GMB platform.
